The Edible Garden Project

Growing my own food is, at least to me, a natural extenstion of my feelings about making things from scratch. In addition, its a great way to ensure my diet is filled with healthy fresh produce that's all naturally friendly towards all of my food intolerances.

If you're new around here, we recently got the ok from our awesome landlords to transform half of our front yard into an edible garden. This is HUGE for us as renters and something we've always wanted to do. So I've started a brand new (as of this April) post series to chronicle our adventures in growing our edible garden.

Edible Garden Project: Planting from Seed

I really only began planting from seeds last year, when just for the heck of it I threw a bunch of chard seeds in a pot - and the we had chard from last fall through the whole winter. 

This year, I'm experimenting.

I've already planted two varieties of carrots, calendula, parsley, nasturtiums, and kale. With our glorious warm weather we've been having, I've picked up a couple of other seeds to experiment with.

Well, we've been planting!

I was lucky enough to be able to take last Friday off from work which just happened to be a gorgeous spring day here in Seattle. We had crossed our fingers that we would have a day like this to start planting our garden, so we hopped to.  I had already purchased some seeds and we went to Swansons to pick up the rest of our starters.

A New Project: Our Edible Garden


Well, it's time to begin consulting these two books. You see, when we bought them it was with the hope that someday we will own a house and be able to plant our whole yard full of edible plants. In the mean time we've been sticking to container gardening and over the past three years we've been carefully cultivating an edible container garden.

But this year things will be different because our wonderful landlords have agreed to let us convert half of our front yard into an edible garden
