Gluten Free In The San Francisco Bay Area, California: The Peninsula

The day after I got back to Seattle from my month long stay in Brooklyn, New York - my husband and I hopped in the car with our pup and headed down to the San Francisco Bay Area to spend a few days with half of our family for the holidays. While it was a quick trip and packed with family gatherings (full of gluten free food) - we still managed to try out a few gluten free friendly spots up and down the Peninsula. We'll start down south in Sunnyvale and get all the way north to San Francisco itself!

If you've been reading my Gluten Free In posts for a while, you'll know that PF Changs is one of my favorites for a great (and safe) gluten free meal. One of the things I love about PF Changs is that it offers options for anyone. There are plenty of vegetarian dishes and if you're sensitive to soy like me - there are a few dishes you can get without it!

The Edible Garden Project: February 2013 Update

If you're relatively new around here and wondering why a gluten free food & travel blogger is writing about edible gardening - it's simply because growing your own food is a mighty simple way to make sure you're eating gluten free. Plus, I enjoy it and I like to share - so there's that too.

It's almost time to start planting for the warmer months ahead and I'm super excited for our garden this year! We're adding a number of new things to the mix including even more planting space.

What major changes are we making based on lessons learned from last year?

  • Our cucumber and pepper plants are going in containers in our back porch area which acts a bit like a greenhouse.
  • We're not planting fennel - it takes up way to much space in raised beds and doesn't yield a whole lot.
  • All of our greens, herbs, carrots, and beets will be all be started from seed and for everything else we'll pick up as starters from the Seattle Tilth Edible Plant Sales

In addition to the containers above, we currently have three raised beds and will be adding a fourth mini-bed for herbs. Oh and now that I'm writing this, I'm realizing that I forgot about our two Russian tea plants, pink lemonade blueberry, and lingonberry plants that also live in containers. This year will be the first that we get to harvest some of our tea!

Cookbook Review: Small Plates & Sweet Treats

Small Plates and Sweet Treats

There were oodles of amazing gluten free cookbooks that came out last fall and the one I was most excited for was Small Plates & Sweet Treats by Aran Goyoaga. Specifically because of the lovely recipes she shares on her blog, Cannelle et Vanille, and the stories about growing up and returning to Basque Country.

Part of my family tree stems from Basque Country and last September I got to see my family's torre (tower) in the town of Gordexola. So Aran's blog and her Basque influenced recipes are a another little way that I can connect with my heritage. On her blog she also uses sheep milk yogurt in her recipes and it just happens to be one of my favorite foods.

Things I love about this cookbook;

  • The recipes use a variety of whole grain gluten free flours and there are short but useful descriptions provided for each of them.
  • It's divided by seasons, making it easier to digest and use over the course of the year.

Things You Should Do In Spain: Hike Atxular's Eye

Located in Parque Natural de Gorbeia, the Itxina massif is full of features to ignite your imagination. With over 500 caves, jagged limestone cliffs and labyrinths, beech forests, and stone huts - it's hard not to create stories of some mysterious world high in the mountains of Basque Country. In fact, one of the caves inside this limestone world is said to be one of the regular homes of the Basque goddess, Mari.

Gluten Free in Manhattan, New York

So I already told you about how fantastic the gluten free options in Brooklyn were - but now I want to tell you about Manhattan, where even more amazing gluten free food awaits you. The best part has to be the variety of food and how easy it is to get around via the subway for all these great options. Even after working long days, it was so simple to hop on the subway and grab dinner on the Upper East Side.

Hands down the best vegan food I've ever eaten and the ambiance of the restaurant was also just great - very warm and cozy. The gluten free menu is varied and extensive with plenty of options for all different kinds of eaters. Other things to love include the fresh juice and dreamy desserts.  My visit to Candle 79 including an amazing creamy squash risotto, a Katie Holmes sighting (she was waiting for take out while I was waiting for my table), a wonderful dinner companion that I met at Camp Mighty, and a brownie topped with chocolate sauce and ice cream. Now no offense to Katie or Caitlin - but that brownie was AMAZING.
