In the past four years I've flown the route from Seattle to Anchorage at least eight times but until this past month, I had never made it down to the Kenai Peninsula. While I've driven the Seward Highway down the Turnagain Arm on every visit from March to July - I've never driven past the turn to the Portage Glacier and Lake. On my latest trip, I planned ahead to make it happen.

My mind and body feel sharp and my imagination runs wild. It's much of the reason why if there's a glacier within driving distance of my travels, I'll head straight there the first opportunity I get.
Read MoreWhen I travel for my less than creative day job, I make it a point to spend at least a little bit of time while off the clock creating. Last week, I was traveling solo in Alaska and had about 6 hours to spare, so I made an attempt at filming my next trip video. If nothing else, I figured it would be good practice - even if I didn't get enough footage to put together a video. With a combination of brand new editing software and some seriously serendipitous timing - I've ended up with some of my favorite shots I've ever taken.

I thought this would end up being a bit of a challenge, but after a couple of phone calls and some luck I ended up finding three different places with either gluten free menus or excellent labeling.
If you find yourself in Anchorage with a couple of hours to spare, a drive down the Seward Highway to the Portage Glacier is a must do.
The Seward Highway itself is a simply gorgeous route, designated as a National Scenic Byway. In it's entiretly it runs the 125 miles in between Seward and Anchorage. If you have time for a full day trip, you can take it all the way to Seward. However, if you're more like me and end up with just a couple of hours to spare you can drive the first half from Anchorage down to the Portage Glacier and take in some great Alaskan views.
It's been almost exactly two years since I was last in Anchorage, but 2012 will be a pretty Alaska heavy year for travel. I've already got two other trips planned in July and August. On this trip I was able to find some great new-to-me gluten free friendly eateries that I will definitely be returning to. I also visited some old favorites and was pleasantly surprised with a new menu addition at one of them.
This is another long overdue post, but I'm finally getting around to it. Surprisingly, Anchorage was not the most difficult place to travel to while being gluten free. I was able to find a number of places that were understanding and receptive, I ended up using my travel cards a lot here and that worked very well.
