In the past four years I've flown the route from Seattle to Anchorage at least eight times but until this past month, I had never made it down to the Kenai Peninsula. While I've driven the Seward Highway down the Turnagain Arm on every visit from March to July - I've never driven past the turn to the Portage Glacier and Lake. On my latest trip, I planned ahead to make it happen.

My mind and body feel sharp and my imagination runs wild. It's much of the reason why if there's a glacier within driving distance of my travels, I'll head straight there the first opportunity I get.
Read MoreWe actually visited the Athabasca Glacier for the first time two years ago, took our chances and walked around on it. Returning this year, the glacier appeared to have changed quite a bit - it looked flatter, the river was larger, and walking on it was no longer tolerated, except on tours. The Seward Highway itself is a simply gorgeous route, designated as a National Scenic Byway. In it's entiretly it runs the 125 miles in between Seward and Anchorage. If you have time for a full day trip, you can take it all the way to Seward. However, if you're more like me and end up with just a couple of hours to spare you can drive the first half from Anchorage down to the Portage Glacier and take in some great Alaskan views.
