Exploring Maligne Canyon

I admit, I'm getting spoiled by all the beautiful canyons I've had the opportunity to explore. So when it came time to hike up Maligne Canyon in Jasper National Park, all I could think of was getting down into the canyon rather than walking along the top. We hiked the trail backwards, starting low at Fifth Bridge and walking uphill to Second Bridge. This little rock outcropping we scrambled down to along the Maligne River, just past Fourth Bridge, may have been my favorite part of the entire 4.2 kilometers.

The draw of Maligne Canyon comes from a few different unique features. First, in some spots at the top of the canyon it's so narrow that squirrels jump across the 50 meter drop. Second, the way the canyon was carved is just fascinating. Beginning at Maligne Lake, the river flows to Medicine Lake where the water drains (almost completely by the winter time) into underground passages which make their way to Maligne Canyon. In the winter, it's possible to take a guided tour through the canyon when the water has all drained out (totally on my list to do now).

Step 1: Re-Imagine Gluten Free Travelette

On September 1st, I answered a very important question for myself: What’s next?

My answer came in a three-part plan and what you are seeing today on this website is Step 1: Re-Imagine Gluten Free Travelette.

When I started this blog, I had no goal other than to share the gluten free friendly restaurants I was finding in all my travels. There was no real plan for where I might take it in the future. That was until November 2012.

Let me break down those past eleven months for you...

A Seattle Farmers Market Recipe Series

Over the course of this summer, I've been making a few extra special trips to Seattle area farmers markets with my camera in tow to create a little series of recipes based on my market finds.

If you aren't familiar with the Seattle area, we're spoiled with over 15 markets operating throughout the city. Granted some are only seasonal, but it still seems So far I've whipped together three recipes with finds from the PhinneyUniversity District, and Ballard Farmers Markets. I'm currently writing up a recipe with some early fall finds at the Broadway Farmers Market and the Columbia City market is high on my list to try next.

Wondering where those recipes are at?

Well if you follow me on Instagram or Facebook you may already know, but over the summer I started as a contributor to a new to the scene food blog, My Cooking Spot. Each month, I'm sharing one Seattle area farmers market and a recipe made with my finds there. While I've still get plenty of posts to come, I thought I'd take a moment to share those recipes I've made thus far.

Scenes from Canada: Mount Revelstoke National Park

Leaving some seriously rainy weather and a very damp campground behind us, we took a chance and drove up the Meadows in the Sky Parkway in Mount Revelstoke National Park. At this point, we had already fled plenty of unfortunate weather and with a seventy percent chance of rain for the next few days - we figured this might be the only chance we have to explore the park.

Gluten Free in Vancouver, British Columbia

Strange as it is, being just a few hours north of Seattle, I've barely spent any time in Vancouver, British Columbia. On our most recent trip, I made sure that at least our route remedied that situation and allowed for a drive and the most important kind of stop in this mostly new-to-me city. That most important stop of course was an all gluten free bakery that I've seen Brooke from Gluten Free Authority post about oh so many times.

Reading from August & September 2013

What I've Been Reading

What am I the most excited about this mont h? M aptia has launched!

This is one of the most beautiful travel posts I've seen in a long time.

Oh my Greenland!

This version of pumpkin pie will have a spot on my Thanksgiving table.

I keep finding more and more places in Canada that are just so dreamy - I'm adding the Magdalen Islands to my must go list!

Well, now I kind of want to go live on a sailboat.

Scenes from the District of Columbia: Washington

On my most recent trip to Washington D.C., I got to stay in the Logan Circle area and I have to say - I just loved the location. It was within walking distance of some fantastic gluten free eats, plenty of new museums, and most importantly my favorite gelato (more posts to come on those details). Although, I freely admit that I may have just loved the location because of this Dalmatian art I spotted on a nearby church.

The Edible Garden Project: September 2013 Update

This year, my high travel season seems to have coincided almost exactly with the most productive time of year for our garden. When we returned from our Canadian Rockies road trip, our garden was brimming with red, orange, and green. Unfortunately, I only had about a week at home before heading out on the road all over again for another two weeks. So in that short week, we harvested as much as possible.

As I had planned, this year I started experimenting with making sauce out of our tomatoes. The Sun Sugar tomatoes were cooked into a fresh puttanesca sauce and a combination of Amish Paste and Brandywine varieties were cooked into a basic sauce using this recipe from the Kitchn as a guideline. The Walla Walla onions, which by the way I plan to grow every year from now on (so easy!), were caramelized for French Onion Soup, eaten on top of pizza, and cooked into chili. Lastly, those beautiful carrots were slow cooked with chicken breasts and shredded for our pup (I know, she's spoiled).
